Criteria and Constraints Our team developed four possible solutions for our intersection problem. The first option is landscaping along the sides of Third in front of Elliot Hall of music. This would prevent walkers from cutting diagonally across the lanes and improves the safety of the walkers and drivers. This solution is also very green because it would be adding to the plants on Purdue’s campus. The plants would also become more effective as they grew in preventing walkers from crossing through them. Some limitations of this solution are that people could walk between the shrubs on the street side and therefore become trapped on the street and more of a danger to cars. The plants would also require regular tending to ensure they remain healthy. This solution also caters directly to the needs of the first crossing and would not be as effective in improving the intersection as a whole.
