Math 1300 Section 4.3 1 Factoring Polynomials Some trinomials that can be factored do not look like the special trinomials from the previous sections. Trinomials written in the form ax 2 + bx + c can be classified into 3 groups. 1. leading coefficient is 1 2. leading coefficient is something other than 1 and there is no common factor 3. leading coefficient is something other than 1 and there is a common factor You can use a box to help you factor in each of these situations. Example 1: Factor 2 2 24 x x + - . Example 2: Factor 2 6 x x - - . Example 3: Factor 2 7 12 x x - + . Example 4: Factor x 2 + 5 x + 6.
