Chapter 1: Applying Fundamental Excel Skills and Tools in Problem Solving I. Level 1: Identifying and Correcting Common Errors in Formatting and Formulas a. Cells – can contain number values, text labels, calculated values b. Inputs – labels and values upon which calculations are based c. Outputs – the calculations and their results d. Error messages: d.i. ####### - insufficient width in cell to display numerical data, or negative date/time d.i.1. Double-click the column dividing line to rectify d.ii. #NAME? – unrecognized text in a formula d.iii. #N/A – no answer d.iv. #REF! – invalid cell reference d.v. #VALUE! – wrong argument type or operand d.vi. #NUM! – invalid numeric values in a formula or function d.vii. #DIV/0! – division by zero e. Accounting Number Format – an accounting format that displays the dollar sign at the left edge of the cell, commas, and two decimal places for the numeric value, with a column of values aligned on the decimal point f. Currency Format – similar to accounting except doesn’t align values on the decimal point, and it places the dollar sign immediately in front of the value g. Comma Style – formats numbers with commas, two decimal places, and values aligned on the decimal point h. Percent Style – formats numbers as percentages, displayed to the nearest percent, with no
