Chapter 3: Determining Effective Data Display with Charts I. Level 1: Visualizing Data a. Five graphics principles related to “ink” a.i. Above all else show the data a.ii. Maximize the data-ink ratio, within reason a.iii. Erase non-data-ink, within reason a.iv. Erase redundant data ink, within reason a.v. Revise and edit b. Data series – the related data points that are plotted on the chart; each data series on a chart has a unique color or pattern and is identified in the chart legend c. Data points – the points in a data series at which the x-axis and y-axis values intersect d. Legend – a box that identifies the patterns or colors assigned to the data series in a chart e. Chart location – embedded on same worksheet or on a separate “chart sheet” f. An excel chart requires at least one numeric data series and at least one label data series g. Chart types g.i. Column – compares values across categories in a vertical orientation g.ii. Bar – compares values across cats in a horizontal orientation g.iii. Line – displays trends over time or by cat. Values are indicated by the height of the lines. g.iii.1. Useful if overall trend of data needs to be emphasized g.iii.2. Plots numeric values on one axis and category labels equidistantly on the other axis g.iv. Area – displays trends over time or by cat. Values are indicated by the filled areas below the line. g.v. Pie – compares the contribution each value in a single numeric data series makes to the whole, or 100% g.v.1. Use when trying to show relative percentages rather than values
