Chapter 5: Retrieving Data for Computation, Analysis, and Reference I. Level 1: Performing Basic Lookups to Calculate and Evaluate Data a. Vertical Lookup Table – a lookup table in which the data to be searched is organized in columns and can be retrieved by a VLOOKUP function b. VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, range_lookup) b.i. Lookup_value – the data you want to look up. Can be a number, text, a logical value, or a name or cell reference that refers to a value b.ii. Table_array – range containing the data that you want to search to find the lookup value. This range must start in the column with the lookup values and extended at least as far as the column containing the data to be returned b.iii. Col_index_num – the number of columns containing the data you want to receive. The number 1 indicates the first column of the lookup table, 2 indicates the second column, and so on b.iv. Range_lookup – the type of lookup you want to perform – TRUE or FALSE b.iv.1. With a TRUE type, the VLOOKUP function finds the greatest value that doesn’t exceed the lookup_value. Values in the first column of the lookup table must be sorted in ascending order b.iv.2. With a FALSE type, the VLOOKUP functions looks only for an exact match of the lookup_value. If it doesn’t find an exact match, #N/A is returned c. HLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, row_index_num, range_lookup) – same as VLOOKUP except that it searches a horizontal lookup table, in which data is stored in
