Chapter 10: Troubleshooting Workbooks and Creating Excel Applications I. Level 1: Preparing Error-Free Workbooks a. Information system – a system that is used to collect, organize, and process data and to communicate and distribute the results in a coordinated manner b. Decision support system (DSS) – a type of information system that helps managers model business situations, especially through what-if analysis c. Applications – workbooks you design so that others can use them in a relatively error-free manner c.i. An Excel app is usually a DSS, a tool that helps managers or other users make decisions or solve problems d. Data validation tool – use to create rules that define what data is valid in a particular cell e. Validation rule – can specify the type of data that is appropriate, such as whole numbers, decimal numbers, dates, time, or text f. Input message – identifies the kind of data the user should enter f.i. Data tab > Data validation > Input message g. Error alert – a message box that displays a message of varying severity h. Data validation rules: h.i. Any value – no restrictions on data h.ii. Whole number – data is restricted to values that are whole numbers only h.iii. Decimal – data is restricted to values which can be any number that can be
