Psychometric Approach Measurement Spearman ("g"): all intelligence tests and all differents areas of intelligence tests are measuring "g" General intelligence: measuring one thing Thurstone (factor analysis): are there subgroups within a group of items, rather than individuals Intelligence is probably made up of different factors and abilities Chrystallized versus Fluid Intelligence o Chrystallized: your IQ for things you have learned, general knowledge o Fluid: intelligence for solving new problems; dealing with novel issues in your environment In general, chrystallized stays fairly stable, but fluid abilities declines with age Recent Theories of Intelligence: Sternberg: analytical, creative, practical o Analytical- intelligence used in traditional IQ tests; assessed in schools o Creative- Intelligence for dealing with novel problems; coming up with new ideas o Practical-More social type of intelligence; street smarts, everyday social situations Video of spelling bee winner who is genius, but has no social skills
