Matt Wharton 1 POS 230 The issue of gay marriage and civil unions has been in the forefront of political debate for the last several years . In response, many conservative groups have proposed amending the US and many state constitutions to define marriage as consisting of one man and one woman (effectively limiting the possibility of legalization of gay marriage) . In your opinion, is this a federal or state issue? Why? As a conservative Republican, it would be expected that I would support any and all attempts by government- both federal and state- to define marriage as being between one man and one woman through a Constitutional amendment . However, while I agree with this definition, I do have a slight libertarian streak in me that prefers the government to stay out of certain issues . I believe that I am better equipped than the government to deal with issues, such as homosexuality as well as abortion, through instilling Christian family values in my own children . I do not condone activist judges legislating from the bench . Judges are appointed, and do not represent me or my family . I have no power to remove these judges, which is extremely threatening to my freedom
