The Meaning of the War 12/2/2010 *Missed first ten minutes of class 1. Minie Ball rifling (concept that a spinning bullet went farther) a. Very heavy, would enter in and explode into the person 2. Amputation factory (didn’t know what else to do) 3. Lincoln says war is a “remorseless struggle” 4. The Battle of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) a. Largest battle ever fought in western hemisphere b. North-90,000, South-70,000 c. Confederate army is looking for shoes, were headed to Philadelphia to burn it to the ground in order to scare the north c.i. Think Lincoln is vulnerable because of the 1864 election (was not sure he would win in the north) thought someone else might become president and start bargaining with the CSA, giving them what they want c.ii. Goal is to scare north into voting Lincoln out of office
