What was Andrew Jackson? 10/28/2010 1. Andrew Jackson defined himself as “one of us” a. Age of Jackson Jacksonian Democracy (politics of mass participation) b. Jackson embodied this era, true spirit of the nation b.i. Some people disagreed (ex: Whig Party formed-people detested Jackson) c. Was horrible at spelling more like the common man, represent democratic mass d. People voted for him because they believed that he stood for them, if we understand him…we can understand the people 2. Background a. Comes from very humble beginnings, the Waxhaws (Scots-Irish Backcountry) a.i. Not sure if born in NC or SC a.ii. Father died right before Jackson was born b. He was a bully: loved to curse, rough house, play practical jokes c. In this region, people hated the English (they were their oppressors) d. Rough and earthy culture physically defend your honor (if someone verbally attacked/insulted you, you would respond physically) d.i. Children called “little shits” e. Childhood happened during the American Revolution, he engaged in guerilla fighting for the patriots e.i.
