Be comfortable with the terminal (using one of the emulators, gnome-terminal, xterm etc) Know how to access the CS machines remotely (using a SSH client) Know how to compile programs using gcc Know how to edit files using a non-gui editor (vim, emacs, nano etc, preferably the first two) STOP me right here if you are not comfortable with any of the above.
