AAE 334, Fall 2011, Homework 10 Due Friday, September 23 at the beginning of class. A horseshoe vortex of strength is used to model a lifting wing of span b for an airplane with performance of a 737-800 . Specifically, b=34.3 m and 1 2 270 s m at speed of 1 230 s m V . 1. Plot the induced velocity in meters per second versus spanwise position in meters on a line that includes the head of the vortex and extending a distance b past either wing tip. Add the extent of the wing to the plot with this Matlab command: hold on ; plot([-b/2 b/2], [0 0], 'k-' , 'LineWidth' ,3); hold off; Limit the vertical extent of the plot to plus and minus 5% of V . 2. Approximately what fraction of the wing sees a downwash greater than 1% of

Unformatted text preview: V ? Explain your method to determine this from the results of part 1. 3. Approximately how far beyond the wingtip is the upwash in excess of 1% of V ? Explain your method to determine this from the results of part 1. Note: the real 737-800 has a swept and tapered wing which requires more detailed modeling than a single horseshoe vortex. Also, the cruise Mach number of 0.785 is in the compressible subsonic regime which we will address the last week or two of the semester. Nevertheless, I wanted some “real numbers” for you to observe in the results. The results will be approximate and in the right order of magnitude....

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
