AAE 334, Fall 2011, Homework 10 SOLUTIONS Due Friday, September 23 at the beginning of class. A horseshoe vortex of strength is used to model a lifting wing of span b for an airplane with performance of a 737-800. Specifically, b=34.3m and 1 2 270 s m at speed of 1 230 s m V . 1. Plot the induced velocity in meters per second versus spanwise position in meters on a line that includes the head of the vortex and extending a distance b past either wing tip. Add the extent of the wing to the plot with this Matlab command: hold on ; plot([-b/2 b/2], [0 0], 'k-' , 'LineWidth' ,3); hold off; Limit the vertical extent of the plot to plus and minus 5% of V . 2. Approximately what fraction of the wing sees a downwash greater than 1% of V ? Explain your method to determine this from the results of part 1. 3. Approximately how far beyond the wingtip is the upwash in excess of 1% of V ? Explain your method to determine this from the results of part 1. Note: the real 737-800 has a swept and tapered wing which requires more detailed modeling
