Blackburn 1 RUNNING HEAD: FINAL PROJECT Final Project Teaira Blackburn Walden University SOCW 6111: Advanced Clinical Practice I
Blackburn 2 Briefly describe the population and presenting problem you are focusing on for this assignment. Researchers suggest that millions of children and adolescents globally are subjected to sexual abuse with devastating impacts on their health and well0being that often last into their adulthood (Amin, A. et al., 2917). The targeted population I intend to work with after graduation is children and adolescent, specifically those that have experienced sexual abuse, maltreatment, or negligence. I want to focus on individuals that have been exposed to trauma and are currently experiencing traumatic events. For this assignment, a presenting problem would be an 18 y/o African American female that has been referred to counseling for depression and suicidal ideations. The client, whom has always performed superior academically, is a high school senior and has recently slacked in academic performance and is at risk of failing a class, which could jeopardize her scholarship for college and lower her current GPA. The client’s parents also have reported that the client has become more recluse at home. Her eating habits have changed, she no longer spends time with her friends or family, and she mainly stays in her room with the doors locked in the dark. After meeting with the client, it is discovered that the client was upset because her cousin had moved in with her family after getting in trouble back home. The client discloses that she was sexually abused by this cousin, her aunt’s son, at the age of 12, the cousin was 14 at the time, while visiting her aunts for the summer. After reporting what happened to her aunt, her aunt told her to never repeat what happened and told her that if she told her parents that they would both go to jail, and she could never see them again. Her aunt also told her that family stick together and have to forgive each other. The client states she had managed to forget what happened after returning home that summer, and eventually stop blaming herself for what happened. She stated that it was not until recently, when she was undressing for a shower, that
Blackburn 3 her cousin entered the restroom without knocking, that she was triggered. The client is very sheltered and reserved, she wants to tell her parents what happened, but is afraid of what may happen when she tells them. The client states that she has started blaming herself again for what has happened. For instance, she stated that it was not her cousin’s fault for not knocking on the door, it was her fault for leaving it unlocked. The client reports that her cousin also appears to have change, but she still feels uncomfortable around him, and notices him watching her very closely since the “bathroom incident”. Provide a review of the articles you reviewed from this project and explain what you learned from conducting this research.
