Old World Crops : Wheat, rice, Date. Apple, citrus/ New World Crops : Peanut, cacao, maize, squash, tomato Ikebana, Bonsai, and Sakai : ikebana is a Japanese flower arrangement that is based on the symbolic use of flowers. Bonsai is specimen grown on miniature scale with the roots and shoots being pruned to keep the plant the same size for a number of years. Sakai a miniature garden grown inside or out, fish tanks and other containers are used for this. Neolithic farmers -During the Neolithic age the people made a very abrupt change from hunting and gathering to primitive farming. The farmers had the greatest contribution to horticulture since they were the first to do so and they developed many different primitive techniques that were perfected over the years. They developed primitive irrigation, cultivation, storage, and fertilizer. They discovered plant domestication during this time. They were very influential on horticulture and helped to develop practices that were used for many years after. Discovery of the science of genetics— Before the discovery of genetics, plant growers would have one species of plant or one of the seed. These seeds were prone to disease and would not be the healthiest of crops. After discovery of genetics, breeders were able to cross pollinate with different genes to help promote a healthier plant with stronger survival character and were also able to create plants with new genes. The greatest diversity for any crop will be found in the center of origin. This fact is used by breeders to locate new genes for crop improvement such as disease resistance. This is the rational for seed banks. Horticulture to medicine- Many natural medicines were discovered from horticulture in ancient times. It became known that it could be used to cure illness and disease. Spices and herbs were found in plants that you could take for medicinal purposes. This increase in spice trade helped America. The doctrine of signatures suggested that plans were put on earth to cure disease. The shape of the plant was used to cure disease that matched the shape of the body part. The elber papyrus document had medical cures. Pre Columbian world maize and bean new world : 1) growing maize and beans was by growing them together with the maize being planted first and for it to provide support for the twining bean plant 2) Nutrition- Beans and maize are complementary for providing essential amino acids. Maize is low in lysine and beans are low in S-containing amino acids 3) plant nut- beans are capable of nitrogen fixation and maize requires high levels of nitrogen 4) culinary- beans and maize are consumed together, the maize is made into a tortilla with beans used as a filling. Herbals and importance to medicine -Herbals are books written on how different herbs are or were used as medicines. There were countless herbals wrote with many different cures for ailments, some were correct and some were very ineffective. Herbals
