Stage of Masters and Johnson Sexual Response Cycle Male Experience and Anatomy Female Experience and Anatomy Excitement Phase After psychological or physical stimulation the male will achieve an erection. An erection is caused by increased blood flow into the corpora cavernosa. The bladder also closes off to prevent the mixing of semen and urine. The scrotum tightens. After either psychological or physical stimulation the blood vessels in the vagina dilate. Blood flow increases in the vaginal walls, which results in a form of “sweating” of fluid that creates lubrication of the vagina. All external parts of the genitals become swollen with blood and the top of the vagina expands. Breath and pulse become more rapid and blood pressure rises. Plateau Phase
