Lab: Precipitation in Double Displacement Reactions Introduction: A chemical reaction is a process by which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances. What this entails is the presence of one of the six chemical reactions; single-replacement, double-replacement, synthesis, decomposition, combustion, and redox. Excluding the latter, each of these processes is separate of one another and all are key to the understanding of chemistry. A precipitate in particular refers to a process in a double-replacement reaction in which a solid substance separates from the solution. To better comprehend the five main classes of chemical reactions, referring to a visual image is helpful: Single-replacement: Double-replacement: Synthesis: Decomposition: Combustion: Group members: Materials: Small scale reaction surface Micropipettes of the following solutions: Potassium iodide Sodium hydroxide Silver nitrate Sodium carbonate Lead (II) nitrate Copper (II) sulfate Iron (III) chloride
