PSY480 Week 4 Summary In both discussion questions this week we discussed some very fundamental questions about clinical psychology. First, how the Ethics Code of the APA relates to the legislative laws of the government: local, state, and federl. Second, the applicability of psychotherapy to the treatment of psychological disorders. In the first, it would seem that the Ethics Code informs the laws but does not dictate the laws. There are even cases where the Ethics Code and the law conflict, such as some state laws of judicial disclosure during trials (Plante, 2005). Plante makes it clear that professional ethics is the higher and more important standard and that if the law and the Ethics Code are in conflict, then the Ethics Code should be followed and explained to the judicial body. In the second, according to a purely biopsychosocial approach to the treatment of psychological disorder, psychotherapy is only one avenue by which treatment is carried out. Last, for the individual assignment I did the case study of the Unabomber, specifically from the perspective of a diagnosis and treatment of schizoid personality disorder (SPD). Even though a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia or narcissistic personality disorder is warranted a individual points of the Unabombers life, a diagnosis of SPD can apply to the entirety of his life (Plante, 2005). He exhibited anti-social tendencies, extreme introversion, fantasizing, and entitlement. This coupled with low affect and low interpersonal contact, warrants such a diagnosis.
