Answer questions C2, C9, C13-C15, E1, E3, E10, and the additional questions below. Question C13 has been simplified. C2. Conjugation is sometimes called “bacterial mating.” Is it a form of sexual reproduction? Explain. In sexual reproduction, two parents with different genomes will produce gametes, which mix together to form a genetically different offspring. In conjugation, genomes of gametes are not mixed; only some genetic material is transferred from one cell to another, which can alter the genotype of the recipient cell. C9. Briefly describe the lytic and lysogenic cycles of bacteriophages. In your answer, explain what a prophage is. The lytic cycle involves a phage infecting a cell to produce many new viruses through reproduction and lysis. The lysogenic cycle incorporates viral DNA with the DNA of the host cell. The mixed DNA created is called a prophage, and will replicate at the origin of the host cell’s DNA. A prophage can not inject a recipient with heritable viral DNA because it only contains part of the original phage’s DNA. C13. Describe the steps that occur during bacterial transformation. What is a competent cell? In bacterial transformation, a donor cell dies and its cellular components, along with the plasma membrane, are broken down into fragments.
