Philosophy Discussion Wednesday, 9/14/11 Substance Dualism 2 things -Interactionist --- physical causes mental and mental causes physical -Parallelist --- two clocks, NO interaction -Epiphenomenalist --- physical events (cutting your arm) cause mental states, but the mental states don’t do anything, don’t cause any physical states -Overdeterministic Dualism --- mental and physical (desire for coffee) leads to another physical event (lifting cup) [ex// bullet and lightning bolt strike a person at the same time; both are responsible for death] -ARGUMENTS: - Radical Doubt -I can not doubt that I have a mind -I can doubt that I have a body -Mind does not equal body - Divisibility -Body is divisible into parts -Minds aren’t divisible into smaller minds -Minds are not the same as bodies Property Dualism -Shadow -Inductive Wednesday, 9/21/11 Behaviorism mental state=disposition to behave (behavior is a physical thing) X is fragile =df X is disposed to break easily If small force is applied to X, X breaks So, fear of snakes=df S is disposed to run away, scream,etc. 1. Fear without displaying behavior (curare)
