The Turing Test **Turing broke German Enigma code in WWII A computer is intelligent if and only if it can pass the Turing Test A computer passes the Turing Test if and only if the judge cannot tell the difference between the computer and the person. Anything is intelligent if and only if it can pass the Turing Test. Offered as an analysis of the concept of intelligence How is judge chosen? Suppose the judge is an expert on genuinely intelligent machines . Turing s response: make the account a sufficient condition only for intelligence . One might try to fix the problem by bringing in the mental qualities of the judge the judge should be sophisticated in thinking about thinking. This would make the proposal circular. Another reply: How do we know that we ourselves really are not just a bag of tricks like ELIZA ? General point: Performance on the Turing Test is no guarantee of intelligence Why? The core of intelligence is mental competence , not behavioral performance. Performance is evidence for competence , but they aren t the same. The case of Deep Blue....
