Lauren Taranow 11-1-10 DEBATE PREPARATION #4: Taking Sides, Issue 2, Are Humans Inherently Violent? YES: “Demonic Males: Apes and the Origins of Human Violence” 1. Authors : Richard Wrangham and Dale Peterson, authors of a book that examines evolutionary factors leading to human violence. 2. Author’s Assumptions : Wrangham and Peterson believe that violence between humans is genetically-inherited from our primate ancestors, and through sexual selection the more violent males had reproductive success. This form of natural selection led to younger generations of humans becoming increasingly violent. 3. Methods and Data : The authors look to scientific evidence of the evolutional relationship between chimpanzees and humans to explain why humans have evolved to be violent. They uses the theory of natural selection to explain how the reproductive success of violent men caused more violence within the next generations of the human population. Their argument is based around the scientific evidence of the similarities
