PHY134 Resonance Exp. 7 Abstract The purpose of this lab is to investigate the properties of an LRC resonant circuit when it is under the resonant condition. We will measure the magnitude and phase of the voltage across each of the circuit elements and compare these expectations to those of calculated theoretically. 1 Knowledge, Understanding, and Skills You should have a “hands-on” experience and ability with all the following: How the voltage compares to the current for: 1. Resistors. (voltage and current in phase). 2. Capacitors. (current first, then voltage). 3. Inductors. (voltage first, then current). and explain why! How to use the oscilliscope to measure a peak voltage. How to use the oscilliscope to measure a phase. The meaning of the phase of an AC waveform. The special properties of an LRC citcuit when it is in resonance. Understand and prove the relations: 1. i = e i π 2 2. - i = e - i π 2 2 Equipment Oscilloscope, Function generator, Inductor coil, Decade resistance box, Decade capacitance box, Frequency counter.
