“The Alchemist” is a modern tale written by Paul Coelho. The story is about an Andalusian Sheppard, Santiago, on the search for his own “Personal Legend.” This is a reoccurring theme in the fable and refers to ones own dream or goal in life. Throughout the novel, Santiago has a reoccurring dream to seek treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. Every time after falling asleep under a sycamore tree, the dream would come about. Curious as to why, Santiago consults a gypsy. Ironically, the gypsy told Santiago to adventure to Egypt. That same day, a mysterious older man came to Santiago and told him that Santiago’s Personal Legend was to travel to the Egyptian pyramids. On his journey he meets different people that help him along the way. After unfortunately being robbed, Santiago is forced to work for a crystal merchant to make some money. Although the man is not very pleasant, working for him teaches Santiago many lessons; one important lesson being that change is necessary for success. Santiago
