ESL 501: Introduction to Academic Writing for International Graduate Students Spring 2011 Course Objectives: 1. To develop research and writing skills for various types of academic assignments expected of graduate students at the University of Illinois. 2. To develop critical reading skills that will facilitate the processing of academic texts. 3. To practice listening and speaking in the classroom context. Although this s a four-skills course (reading, writing, listening and speaking), the emphasis will be on academic writing. You will read and discuss materials on various topics and learn how to write academic essays, summaries, critical reviews and research papers that are informed, persuasive, and that conform to academic expectations. The term will be divided into four units culminating with a final research paper on a topic related to your field of study. In addition to the research paper, you will be required to submit three shorter writing assignments, each of which will be used to assess your understanding of material covered. Because this course is designed to improve your academic writing skills, you will become progressively more responsible for evaluating your own work and that of your classmates.
