2 ECE344: Operating Systems Hardware Resources Hardware resources in a computer system can be broadly classified into 3 types: – Processor – Memory – Devices Each have different characteristics and purposes from the point of view of the OS

3 ECE344: Operating Systems Processor (CPU) Processors are active elements of computer system A processor consists of an instruction set that defines the actions it can perform – All processors have load and store instructions for moving items between memory and registers – Many instructions for comparing and combining values in registers and putting result into a register – An example is the MIPS instruction set used in OS161

4 ECE344: Operating Systems Basic Anatomy of a Processor Program Counter (PC) – Holds the memory address of the next instruction Instruction Register (IR) – Holds the instruction currently being executed General Purpose Registers (Reg. 0. .n) – Hold variables and temporary results – MIPS processor used in OS161 has 32 Stack Pointer (SP) – Holds address of memory for accessing stack Processor Status Word (PSW) – Contains control bits including the mode bit which determines whether privileged instructions can be executed
