Bartlett 1 Megan Bartlett SPA 248 – Kara Adams February 2, 2012 Culture Paper National Association of the Deaf Although originally founded on August 25, 1880 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is now based out of Silver Spring, MD. When founded, Edwin Booth wanted to create a nonprofit organization in order to help support the need of the Deaf as a class. Leading the NAD was the first president of the organization Robert P. McGregor (Rosenblum). Since its start it has expanded nationwide for all Deaf persons seeking support in the use of American Sign Language, and for issue that are important to the Deaf community in their hopes to be represented on a national level. The mission of the National Association of the Deaf is to “preserve, protect and promote the civil, human and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States of America” (About). They also have some core values important to the association, with their most important as diversity. Others include their fight against audisim, which is the inequity of the
