Megan Bartlett SPA 248- Kara Adams February 16, 2012 Culture Paper 3 GU and Deaf President Now Gallaudet University, located in the District of Columbia, U.S. is a very significant university in the Deaf culture (Gallaudet). The main reason that it is so significant is because it is one of the world’s only schools that all programs and services are “specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students” (Fast Facts, 2010). The university is designed to provide a quality liberal and professional education in both of their undergraduate and graduate programs. Although not very common, students that are hearing, degree-seeking undergraduate students are also admitted to the school. The school has proven their success through a statistic that says 90 percent of their undergraduates are either employees or furthering their education (Fast Facts). One figure who became part of the faculty before becoming president in 1988 is I. King Jordan. He is well known because he is the first deaf president of an institution of high
