Journal # 3 Insider vs. Outsider Insider vs. Outsider • In Journal 3 we talked about circumstances where we felt like insiders and outsiders. • Being an insider/outsider influenced our:
o Selfesteem: confidence in one's own worth or abilities • We reached the consensus that being an insider raised our selfesteem, and being an outsider lowered our selfesteem.
o ex: Jana and I experienced being outsiders from sports team cliques Identity and Group Membership Identity and Group Membership • Identities develop in relation to minority and majority group membership. • Identities are multiple and reflect gender, sexuality, age, race, ethnicity, religion, class, nationality, and other aspects of our lives.
o ex: my Jewish identity made me an insider at bar/bat mitzvah services, but an outsider at my boyfriend's Christmas dinner. Identity and Stereotypes Identity and Stereotypes • Identity characteristics form the basis for stereotypes and prejudice. • Prejudice: an attitude toward a cultural group based on little or no evidence • Stereotype: widely held belief about a group of people • Prejudices and stereotypes can influence what groups we choose to be insiders in, and what groups we may refrain from joining because we assume we will feel like outsiders.
o ex: After our outsider experiences with basketball and field hockey, Jana and I may now hold stereotypes about these types of teams, and choose not to be a part of similar ones in the future. Journal #4

Self Perceptions • Perception: the process by which individuals select, organize and interpret external and internal stimuli to create their view of the world
• SelfReflexivity: a process of learning to understand oneself and one’s position in society.
• Identity: the concept of who we are Face
