COM 107 notes 02/20/12 Diversity Issues in Visual Media - Social Identity Theory: Individuals achieve higher self-esteem if they feel that they share a social identity with other members of a group - Sense of community, sense of belonging, sense of social identity - Social construction of identity: the social identities we adopt are largely developed by the society we live in. Ethnicity, sexuality, gender identification are mainly understood in terms of the cultural cues they’ve been endowed with through media and social interaction - Social Hierarchy: certain social groups are perceived as being “ranked” higher than everyone else - SCWAMP: straight, Christian, able-bodied, male, property-owning - Hegemony: one social group dominates all other groups - Othering: people who do not fall into a socially accepted group, they are categorized
