Nayef Jaber Period 5 11-21-2011 I. THE HARDING ADMINISTRATION a. New Policies Favor Big Business a.i. President Harding named Andrew Mellon Secretary of the Treasury a.ii. Congress reduced spending from $18 billion to $3 billion a.iii. Harding raised the tariff on imports to promote the selling of American goods, but in response European nation’s raised tariffs on American goods hurting the economy a.iv. Harding worked to reduce the laws and regulations against businesses a.v. Harding Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover wanted to achieve voluntary advancement b. The Ohio Gang Cashes In b.i. Harding was not intelligent and once he stated “I listen to one side and they seem right…I talk to the other side, and they seem just as right, and here I am where I started…What a job!” b.ii. Harding’s ordered others to make decisions that he should have made, many of which were his Poker buddies , The Ohio Gang b.iii. These were greedy men who just wanted to use the government to get rich
