types of punishments Deterrence- Prevent crime by increasing cost. General Deterrence- stops others from committing the same crime by publicizing to media. Incapacitation- take you out of society so you can’t commit a further offense Rehabilitation- we want to fix the person help them, Retribution - punishment that is considered to be morally right and fully deserved. Human nature - people were born w. a blank slate - can be formed to w.e you want, they are new and havnt done anything wrong crime and deviance crime- harmful to others, deviant behavior, breaking laws, and result is criminal court deviation- violating cultural norms, harmful to yourself when deviation start to harm others it becomes a crime crime=mala in se-bad in themselves, mala prohibita-bad b/c prohibited by law (weed), violation of norms actus reus and mens rea These fall under the category of guilt actus reus- guilty act mens rea- guilty mind- purposeful, knowing, negligent, reckless criminology (4 parts) 1) making laws 2) breaking of laws 3) reaction to the breaking of laws
