In this Unit, you will learn the duties and responsibilities of the Administrative Medical Specialist, and take a brief look at some basic interpersonal skills required to work effectively in an office environment. Next, you will learn about the many career opportunities available to the AMS in a variety of environments, including medical specialties. This Unit also stresses the importance of continuing education, professional association affiliation, and the benefits of certification and credentialing. As you go through your materials, you will notice your textbooks use different terms for the title of the position you are hoping to attain. Some call this position “Insurance Billing Specialist” or “Medical Coder”, but it is also referred to as “Administrative Medical Specialist”, “Medical Billing Specialist”, “Medical Assistant”, and “Administrative Medical Assistant.” We have chosen the materials for this course based upon their strengths, and you will notice that we do not utilize each chapter of your textbooks. Because of this, one difference you will notice is that you may be given different names for the same position. All of these titles basically refer to the same position, so please do not allow this to confuse you. Based on our experience, we feel we have organized the material in the most conducive manner to learning the information you will need to become successful in this field.
