Unformatted text preview: Overview This Unit provides an in-depth look at medical ethics and etiquette, the HIPAA privacy initiatives, and State and Federal laws that govern the conduct of medical professionals. Ethics and etiquette, while not laws, do have an impact on our behavior. They are guiding principles and include honesty, respect and the Golden Rule of treating others as they deserve to be treated. HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, is the single- most important legislation impacting healthcare. It affects everyone in allied health, and those who come in contact with the healthcare delivery industry patients, employers, providers of service, insurance companies, and software vendors. This legislation mandates the protection of private, individually identifiable, health information of patients. Overview This Unit also introduces concepts, terminology and impacts of civil and criminal law. The impacts on providers of service, particularly the Administrative Medical Spet, are discussed at length. 1. Medical Ethics 2. Etiquette 3. Medical Practice Acts 4. Privacy & Confidentiality 5. The Law The topics covered in this section include: Objectives 1. Understand legal terminology as it applies to Healthcare 2. State the difference between medical ethics and medical etiquette 3. State the purpose for obtaining a signed consent form 4. Explain the contents of an authorization to release medical information 5. Describe the components of an informed consent for a procedure or service 6. Understand types of contracts and their importance 7. Know the principles of patients rights 8. Understand HIPAAs purpose and components, and its impacts on healthcare delivery 9. Define various types of contracts 10. Explain statutes governing subpoena of records Online Course Preparation 1.
