Overview This Unit provides an in-depth look at medical ethics and etiquette, the HIPAA privacy initiatives, and State and Federal laws that govern the conduct of medical professionals. Ethics and etiquette, while not laws, do have an impact on our behavior. They are guiding principles and include honesty, respect and the “Golden Rule” of treating others as they deserve to be treated. HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, is the single- most important legislation impacting healthcare. It affects everyone in allied health, and those who come in contact with the healthcare delivery industry – patients, employers, providers of service, insurance companies, and software vendors. This legislation mandates the protection of private, individually identifiable, health information of patients.
