In this assignment we are going to compare two partial response CPM modulation formats: Format #1: GMSK with a time-bandwidth product of . Note that GMSK has a modula- tion index of . Format #2: CPM with a modulation index of and a phase pulse shape given by . Part 1) Derive the optimum receiver for each signalling format. This should include a description of the front end correlators (or matched filters) needed as well as a detailed description of how the sequence estimator works. That is, how does the Viterbi algorithm use the output of the correla- tors to find the ML sequence? Note that for the case of GMSK, you will have to use a convenient approximation to the phase pulse in order to keep the receiver complexity to a manageable level.
