1 OLS 274 Research Paper Mark A Eldridge Professor Goodrich Purdue University The global structure of business is ever changing. In order for business to run sufficiently, new technologies must be created to meet this change. These technologies not only allow a business to run more sufficiently, but they also increase productivity, decrease costs, and allow room for the business to expand into new markets. These technologies have been known as virtual collaboration technologies. Second Life, Tandberg products, and Skype are examples of revolutionary virtual collaboration technologies that have been created to fill a need in business.

2 It must be understood what virtual collaboration is, what are the different kinds of virtual collaboration, how they are changing business, and why leaders need to be able to understand and use virtual collaboration. Virtual collaboration was created with the development of new technologies, specifically in the fields of audio, video, and internet. Virtual collaboration uses technologies such as video conferencing and virtual worlds to give teams from across the world access to information that was not currently available. It creates a pool of knowledge and allows businesses who could not currently work together the ability to come together and work on specific projects or problems. This is where virtual collaboration really shines. It allows people who could not afford the high cost of information access to it. For example, doctors in third world countries will have access to the latest information on diseases, cures, and medical practices. This will increase the quality of life in these countries and decrease mortality rate. Virtual collaboration creates a virtual environment for businesses to work together. It creates and implements flexibility, creativity, and innovation. This will allow for more people to come together to create jobs, solve global problems such as global warming, and spark up new ideas. This allows company to go without the thousands of dollars in traveling expenses when they can use video conference calls to have the company displayed on a screen right in front of them. So they still get the same effect without the high cost of travel. Major companies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Apple saw the use of these technologies which is why they supported them from the get go. IBM was an especially important partner in the development of these technologies. They use these technologies to collaborate with universities in researching new technologies. (IBM Research 2009) Even though virtual collaboration is a relatively new type of technology, it is still constantly evolving. Open virtual collaboration is the new type of virtual collaboration. Certain companies such as IBM and
