OBJECTIVE The objective of this lab was to study the kinds of compounds that form hydrates. From this lab one should be able to determine the percentage of hydrate water lost by an unknown compound upon heating. From this one may be able to calculate the number of moles of water of hydration per mole of hydrated compound from the amount of water lost and the formula weight of the anhydrous compound. MATERIALS 1. Unknown Compound 2. Porcelain crucible 3. Triangle 4. Bunsen Burner 5. Analytical Balance METHOD 1. Clean and weigh the crucible on the balance 2. Heat the crucible to redness to burn off everything then let it cool. 3. Record the mass. 4. Place 1g of the unknown compound in the crucible and record the mass 5. Heat the crucible to redness (About 10 min.), then take off the flame. 6. When cooled, weight and record the mass 7. Heat the crucible to redness (About 10 min.), then take off the flame. 8.
