November 28, 2011 Biology 311C Lecture 37 Tumor-suppressor genes help prevent uncontrolled cell growth, e.g. inhibit the cell cycle in the cell signaling pathway. A gene is sequence of DNA that codes for polypeptide chains and RNA molecules. We inherit 23 chromosomes each from our parents. On the chromosomes, we find the genes. The trait, or phenotype, is the physical manifestation of the genes. The genotype codes for the phenotype.

Meiosis is necessary to create gametes that contain half of the genetic information. A homologous chromosome code for the same thing. They are in the same location.
