1 Factors Associated with UH Students’ Selection of the Sociology Major [Sample (Truncated) Research Proposal for Pedagogical Purposes Only] [Name] [Date] ABSTRACT The proposed study examines the factors associated with students’ declaration of an undergraduate major. Specifically, what factors contribute to this declaration? The study will also test the hypothesis that students who declare the Sociology major compared to other majors are more likely to subscribe to an idealist ideology—i.e., an orientation to change society for the better. The proposed study will recruit approximately 100 respondents from a large public post- secondary institution. Respondents will complete a 20-item pencil and paper survey that measures demographics, college characteristics, and factors associated with major declaration. Coded survey data will then be analyzed statistically. A difference of means test (t-test) will be used to determine if there are statistical differences in idealistic orientation between Sociology and non-Sociology majors. The proposed study will contribute important knowledge that will inform undergraduate directors as they develop programming to better serve undergraduate students, particularly in Sociology. INTRODUCTION Undergraduate directors in post-secondary institutions are tasked with the job of developing programs that serve the needs of their students. An understanding of why students choose the majors they do provides an important starting point for the development of appropriate and effective programs. The proposed research examines various factors associated with students’ declaration of an undergraduate major. Moreover, it tests the hypothesis that subscription to an idealist ideology is more likely to be associated with the choice to major in samantha kwan 3/17/2020 4:36 PM Comment : Title, name, and date samantha kwan 3/17/2020 4:37 PM Comment : Abstract < 200 words. 2 Sociology compared to other majors. This is because an idealist ideology involves a desire to help change society and the Sociology degree is, in part, about scientifically studying the social world in order to address pervasive inequalities and to change society for the better. This research is important because knowing what factors correlate with the Sociology major declaration will allow directors to develop effective programmatic strategies to increase the number of Sociology majors, as well as to better serve the Sociology undergraduate population. METHODS Participant Recruitment and Sampling Strategy The proposed study will examine undergraduate students at the University of Houston.
