1. Who is Betty Friedan, and why does Hirshman pay her homage? What does Hirshman mean when she says “the thickest glass ceiling is at home”? Further, why does Hirshman state that “bounding home” is not good for women and certainly not good for society? Why do you think that college educated women make the choice to stay home? (Develop this answer with evidence.) Survey women about their job choices. Find out why many choose Nursing as opposed to Medicine; find out why many choose child service industries, such as pre-school, elementary school or social worker positions as opposed to mechanical or electrical engineering, chemistry, biology or environmental studies—where the jobs of the future will lie? Don’t take their “I like to help people” as the final answer. Press them for deeper explanations. Start with your mothers! 2. Explain fully Hirshman’s 5 point plan for success. (Comes later in the book, and you must be specific in your answer) 3. Review at least 3 magazines for women to report on the content stories of each.
