Compare this introduction: James, the main character in the Sky is Gray, takes a bus ride with his mother into town. On the bus, he meets a pretty girl to whom he is attracted. In town, his mother takes him to eat and then to the dentist to have his tooth looked at. When he is cold, his mother takes him into a store to warm his body. Afterwards, they are invited into the home of a white couple who feel sorry for them and who insist that James and his mother eat before returning home. James suffers many hardships on this journey from the farm to the city but learns a number of valuable lessons. This introduction does not emphasize the difficulty that James will face on his journey into the city. Instead, the introduction suggests that his bus ride into the city was exciting and uneventful.
