Unformatted text preview: Yingli Huang Critique #2 Waylon Lenk THR 101 The Age of Adolescent Spring awakening is indeed a rock musical mixed with struggles of disobedient students and it reveals the significance of communication between old and young generations. Playwright Frank Wedekind writes it in 1891, a time period when late Victorian Era is worshiped. During that period, conventional rules and cultures are valued the most. Adults educate and nurture their children in their traditional ways which they think is proper, but children’s curiosity and creativity is neglected. Wedekind holds the belief that “The laws of this world are for children”, so he incorporates the confusion of authority figures, sexuality, all these common but taboo topics into the play without scruple. Throughout the play, adolescents face various dilemmas and pressures from their families, school, and interpersonal relationships, and each is represented by different artistic styles: costume design, musicals, as well as conversations and interactions between characters. In order to resemble the historical background of the play that dates back to 1800s in Germany, essential elements such as a researching school style remains intact in the play. As for schoolteachers, who represent an absolute rightness of authority figure, the practice of corporal punishment using a cane is common. When students cannot recite the text which the teacher requires them fluently, he will hit them with the cane and students must obey and accept the treatments. For boys they all wear knee pants, dark stockings and suits. Throughout the play, they express their anger and confusion through rock and roll music but none of them dyes their hair like those fancy rock stars.
