Share - Sociologists often begin with the observation that race is socially constructed. What does that mean? Race- Socially created systems of classification that depends on their assumption of biological difference associated with physical attributes (skin color) and arranged hierarchically Racial Formation- A socio-historical process in which racial categories are created, inhabited, transformed, or destroyed. Ethnicity- Socially created system that attempts to define cultural groups by cultural practices Stereotypes and Prejudice- - Racial/ Ethnic stereotypes- Unreliable generalizations about all members of a group that do not recognize individual differences within the group - Prejudice- A set of negative belief and attitudes- often based in stereotypes- that lead us to “prejudge” people based on their social location Racism Discrimination Discrimination- Behaviors which deny opportunities and equal rights to individuals
