Unformatted text preview: 11/15/2011 Sociology Gender Inequality: Gender Discrimination- - Glass ceiling- Women can see similarly qualified people promoted to manager but they are not promoted - Glass escalator- men in female dominated positions get promoted more than women- Sexual harassment- (quid pro quo) when a supervisor uses his position to try and elicit sexual activity from an employee by threatening to fire or promising to promote- Hostile environment- when a person feels threatened/unsafe because of constant teasing or threatening by other workers Power and Patriarchy- - Patriarchy- What men do that exploits women, more that all mens individual actions, its the process, structure, and ideology of womens subordination Resisting Patriarchy-- Feminism- Belief that women are equal to men Male privilege- - If I am never promoted, its not because of my sex - I am taught to fear walking alone after dark in public places much less than my female counterparts - If I choose to have children, my masculinity will not be called into question...
