10/4/2011 Sociology Media: - Media is culture and culture is media - The media may allow us to represent ourselves to the world but it is also a powerful tool with which the world is represented for us - “People who work in the media are producing, reproducing and transforming the field of ideology Media is bot produced and consumed: - We are all becoming prosumers - This means we are engaging in the process of producing content and consuming content simultaneously - Does this mean that the world is becoming flat? Media Consolidation- Increases control of increasing variety of media by a smaller and smaller number of companies Identity Construction: 1- Surveillance- to find out what the world is like 2- Decision making 3- Aesthetics 4- Diversion (but are we assuming ourselves to death?) 5- Identity- Through the media we know who we are and how we fit in society. Consuming mass media allows us to create and maintain a group identity 10/6/2011 The Interpretive Community - Media is always consumed within an interpretive community
