Hrs. per wk: Credit Hours: Application of sociological principles to the major problems of contemporary society, such as inequality, crime and violence, substance abuse, deviance, or family problems Course Description (e-catalog): Writing Basic Skills Prerequisite: ENGL 0300 Reading Basic Skills Prerequisite: READ 0302 PREREQUISITES, CO-REQUISITES and OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Textbook: Social Problems and the Quality of Life. Lauer and Lauer (12th edition) * Students, you may use an earlier edition of the textbook. However, please note that not all chapters are in sync. with the assigned text. It will be your responsibility to stay current on the assigned readings/chapters. TEXTBOOKS (including ISBN#) and REQUIRED MATERIALS/RECOMMENDED READING: Always check your email for course updates. Keep up with all coursework. Staying current with the readings and assignments will help you to be prepared for quizzes and examinations. Annotated Bibliography: In lieu of a research paper this semester, an Annotated Bibliography will be required. ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT: A course in Sociology introduces students to some of the tools researchers use to analyze data obtained when conducting sociological research. To use these tools effectively, students need to be familiar with the structure of research reports as they appear in refereed, professional journals and have a basic knowledge of American Psychological Association style (APA) as presented in the current Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. To meet this objective, students in SOCI1301 will be required to submit an Annotated Bibliography. For this assignment, each student will: 1. Choose any topic related to Sociology to research. (Please use your textbook for ideas…) I would encourage you to pick a topic of study related to your Major, or career field.
