Students learn to identify the main idea, context clues, word order, pronoun reference and signal words. They also preview, predict, understand and draw conclusions, scan, and summarize. Students also interpret diagrams, charts, and other visual content. Semester Hours: (3 -3- 0) Course Description (e-catalog): Placement test PREREQUISITES, CO-REQUISITES and OTHER REQUIREMENTS: THEMES FOR TODAY 1 3rd edition Smith and Mare Bi-lingual dictionary (paper, electronic, or online access) TEXTBOOKS (including ISBN#) and REQUIRED MATERIALS/RECOMMENDED READING: ESLA 0313 - 001 Reading and Vocabulary I 78191 Goals: Develop skills and techniques for reading esl prose and charts and graphs; learn methods to acquire new vocabulary using both context clues and dictionaries. Students will be able to understand paragraphs and passages. 2. Students will be able to scan texts for information. 3. Students will acquire dictionary skills. 4. Students will be able to understand vocabulary in context. 5. Students will be able to answer comprehension questions and draw conclusions. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES / PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: GRADES will be based on the following 1. Regular classroom attendance and participation (text required) 2. Homework assignments completed on time 3. Evidence of learning and understanding in exercises and tests 4. Improvement of reading speed and comprehension 5. Increased vocabulary recognition and usage **It may be advisable for some students to repeat the course if they don’t do well the first time.
