Students will examine the social, psychological and biochemical ramifications of drug use/abuse as it relates to a growing and complex society. Course Description (e-catalog): Writing Basic Skills Prerequisite: ENGL 0300 Reading Basic Skills Prerequisite: READ 0302 Math Basic Skills Prerequisite: MATH 0300 PREREQUISITES, CO-REQUISITES and OTHER REQUIREMENTS: TEXTBOOKS (including ISBN#) and REQUIRED MATERIALS/RECOMMENDED READING: COURSE CONTENT: Application Level: Upon successful completion of this class the student will: Identify physical signs and symptoms of drug abuse. List and explain the legal and social aspects of substance use and abuse including the topics of legalization of certain drugs, drug testing, government regulation of drugs, and penalties for drug-related crimes. Evaluate the various methods and programs available for the treatment, rehabilitation and support of those who abuse drugs, are chemically dependent, and those non-users who are indirectly affected by drug use. Analyze the main finding regarding the drugs, crime and violence connections. Research employee assistance programs and explain their role in resolving productivity problems. Knowledge Level: Upon successful completion of this class the student will: Define terms such as addiction, toxicity, tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, codependence, and withdrawal. Identify symptoms and signs of physical and psychological abuse and addiction. Explain the major categories of drugs and examples of each.
