Dennis Uzar 9/26/10 W-131 Comparative Critique The essays by Harlon Dalton author of “Horatio Alger” and David Brooks author of “Our Sprawling Supersize Utopia” greatly differ in many aspects . Dalton puts more emphasis on the quest to gain the American Dream and the difficulty that comes along . Brooks takes a different approach and discusses the ways that people have obtained the American Dream and how those who have and have not are living . However , there are also many similarities in the two essays that are not so apparent at first glance . Brooks and Dalton both have different claims that are based on the same idea of opportunity . Both authors agree that all Americans chase the American Dream , however Dalton argues that race plays a big part in the success of a person while Brooks doesn’t bring up race as a negative attribute in the path of success . In “Horatio Alger” Dalton immediately emphasizes how although hard work , persistence , and initiative are absolutely critical , race plays a big role in whether a person can be successful (87) . Dalton argues that everyone is aching for the perfect American lifestyle but most people are not judged on the same scale . Dalton specifically points out how Blacks know all about the
