Dennis Uzar C103 Lab 2/1/11 Erick Pasciak Title: % by mass of NaHCO3 in Alka Seltzer Tablets Results and Discussion The goal of % by mass of NaHCO3 in Alka Seltzer Tablets is to determine the loss of mass of CO2 the amount of NaHCO3 reacted and the % by mass in the tablet. To do this it was necessary that 35mL of varying mixtures of vinegar and water were present starting with 35mL of water and decreasing the amount by 5mL and increasing the amount of vinegar added by 5mL each trial. First the cup with the liquid was weighed then after weighing both the cup with liquid and Alka Seltzer tablet the Alka Seltzer was dropped into the 35mL mixture and allowed to totally dissolve (when it stopped bubbling). The cup, now with all substances mixed into it, was weighed again and the loss of mass of CO2 was calculated by adding the mass of the cup with liquid and the mass of the tablet then subtracting the mass of the cup with all substances from that answer. To find the mass of NaHCO3 reacted the loss of mass of CO2 was divided by the
